Integrated Wetland Technology (IWT-IIT Bombay IP)

Conventional sewage treatment plants are tricky to operate and maintain, as it requires regular power supply and skilled man force, which limits its application practically. Integrated Wetland Technology (IWT), is an innovative natural treatment system for treatment of sewage naturally. IWT is an engineered wetland system which uses wetland vegetation, support media, and their associated microbial assemblages to assist in treating wastewater. It comprises of primary, secondary and tertiary treatment systems.

PSRT (Primary Solid Removal Tank) which functions as a primary treatment removes 60-70% of suspended solid along with 35 – 40% of BOD. Planted Bed behaves as secondary treatment and reduces 80-90% of BOD. Two stage sludge management system lengthens frequency of sludge removal from planted bed and provide additional edge to IWT against most of the wetland-based technologies. The final treated water from the system meets discharge standards set by CPCB and can be used for secondary purposes such as irrigation, gardening and toilet flushing. The innovative design of IWT makes it technologically feasible and economically viable solution to treat wastewater in India and worldwide.
